Arriving on the Via Baltica: Read more
Baltica Hamburg Altona is at Kirchenstraße 42, 22767 Hamburg, in the Trinitatis quarter in Altona-Altstadt. The nearest station, Königstraße, is about 300 metres away – a four-minute walk. Trains run there from the airport, from Hamburg Hauptbahnhof (the main station) and from Altona station without a single change.
Hamburg’s S-Bahn is the city rail network – frequent, above and below ground, and part of the same HVV fare system as the buses and the U-Bahn underground. Our station is Königstraße, served by lines S1, S3 and S7. From the platform it is roughly 300 metres to Kirchenstraße 42. Between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. the S1 runs every ten minutes, outside those hours every twenty.
The station sits directly beneath the terminals. Take the S1 towards Wedel and stay on it until Königstraße: 13 kilometres, about 40 minutes, no change. One thing worth knowing for the journey back – at Ohlsdorf the train splits in two. Only the front three carriages continue to the airport; the rear three end at Poppenbüttel. On the way to us it makes no difference which half you are in.
If you arrive by long-distance train, the S-Bahn platforms are inside the main station. The S1 and the S3 towards Altona or Wedel reach Königstraße in about 15 minutes, running through the Citytunnel past Jungfernstieg and Landungsbrücken – 4.8 kilometres, again without changing.
Altona is one stop away: take the S1, S3 or S7 one station towards the city centre. If you would rather see the neighbourhood straight away, it is a 1.5-kilometre walk of about 20 minutes through Ottensen and the old town of Altona.
The building has its own parking garage. A space can be added to your stay for €18.00 per day, which saves you hunting for on-street parking in Altona. Set your sat nav to Kirchenstraße 42, 22767 Hamburg.
The Baltica is an official pilgrim hostel on the Via Baltica, the northern European branch of the Way of St James. If you arrive on foot, a valid pilgrim credential gets you a bed for €29.00 a night. Everything about that is on our page for pilgrims; the route itself is described at jakobsweg.de.
